This project is a full computer-aided design (CAD) build of a turbofan engine, modeled part-by-part in SolidWorks and brought together into a single top-level assembly.
The brief: design and CAD a complete turbofan to a fixed set of requirements — the overall engine had to stay within given dimensional limits, while the geometry of the fan and core had to be sized to hit a target bypass ratio (the ratio of air routed around the core to the air driven through it). Every component was modeled to satisfy those constraints, then mated into a coherent, manufacturable assembly complete with a dimensioned set of engineering drawings.
A turbofan works by drawing air through a large inlet fan, splitting it into a bypass stream and a core stream. The core air is squeezed through the low-pressure and high-pressure compressor spools, mixed with fuel and ignited in the combustion chamber, and then expanded through the turbine stages, which spin the compressors and fan. The high-energy exhaust leaves through the exhaust duct, while the nacelle shapes the bypass flow and houses the whole machine.
The Build
The model is broken into the following components, each modeled as its own part file:
- Inlet Fan — the front fan stage that pulls air into the engine
- Low-Pressure Compressor/Turbine (LP spool)
- High-Pressure Compressor/Turbine (HP spool)
- Combustion Chamber — where fuel and compressed air burn
- Injector — meters fuel into the combustor
- Exhaust Duct — channels and accelerates the exit flow
- Nacelle — the outer housing and bypass duct
- Turbo Fan Assembly — every part above, mated into the complete engine
Engineering Drawings
Each part and the full assembly were detailed into formal engineering drawings with dimensions, views, and a title block. The full assembly drawing is featured below, followed by the individual component sheets. You can also open or download the complete PDF underneath the gallery.
